The Circle of Life I can finally share this piece!  I think it's become one of my favorites.  This was a commission piece for my husband's sweet Aunt.  She loves butterflies and she had seen another piece that I had completed last year and asked if I would create something along the same lines for her.  Although this didn't turn out to be an exact replica of the piece I created before, I love this one even more.  It is lighter and more luminescent than the other was.  I added 5 butterflies representing her "original family".  Now, the family has evolved and transformed, with the blessing of grandchildren and spouses.  I feel like this painting symbolizes the evolution of life...how it can change and become even more beautiful than we ever dreamed possible. I used a vintage handkerchief for the background.  I also added some spackling paste for texture and depth. I added various paints and inks.  F...

"Magic in the Mess" It's hard to believe that January is already over and another month has begun.   What a month January was.  My son got married in December and they announced that they are having a baby boy, due to make his appearance the first part of June.  He will be our first Grandson and we are so excited.  At the same time, my Father-in-Law became extremely ill and recently passed away.  It's so hard to believe he is gone.  My husband still feels like he needs to pick up the phone every week and check on him.  My daughter struggles...every day.  She is a single mom raising my granddaughter on her own.  I worry about my aging parents and I wish we lived closer so we could help more.  I constantly wonder what will happen next and how will we get through it.  I thought things would be easier at this stage of life.   I guess my point is, there always seems to be some mess, some drama going on in life. ...

Fly     Flying away and wings seem to be my "thing" lately....hmmm....wonder what that means!       This is my latest finished mixed media piece.  I started it during a recent workshop that I gave in which I wanted people to create a piece based on one "word".  If you had to think of your mantra for the year, day, moment, what would that word be and what would that mean to you ?    This was created with paint, stencils, molding paste, and paper.  The middle piece is a glass drawer pull.  The word "Fly" resides in the upper right-hand corner.  It measures 12X12X1.5 and will be finished with a resin coating, so there is no need for framing!   If you are interested in purchasing or have any comments, please feel free to email me at:  saltlightwatercolors@yahoo.com .   http://donnamartinfineart.com/ 

  This is a special little mixed media piece that I did for my husband.  It has a very cool story behind it, so if you have a moment...   A few years ago, my husband's mother passed away.  She was a beautiful woman with a fiesty Italian spirit and a love for her children and grandchildren that knew no end.  She was actually a watercolor artist and her paintings are gorgeous.  We didn't expect her to go as quick as she did.  She had just fallen and hit her head, but we were all expecting her to recover and be ok.  She wasn't.  She ended up having some bleeding in her brain and the situation just deteriorated very quickly.  She passed away the day after they transferred her to Hospice, one day before my husband's Birthday.   She had always told us that if anything ever happened to her, she wanted us to scatter her ashes at sea, she loved it so much and that is where she always felt at home.  Life has a way of ge...
