In the Silence In the Silence began with a stark, white, canvas.  As I began thinking about this painting and what I wanted to "say" with it, I added vintage text and vintage musical notes.  I added glazes and layers of paint so that just a portion of the text shows through.  I added more layers of ink with stencils and then wiped it away.  I used inks to create the many layers and branches of the trees, as well as the moody atmosphere in this piece. As I was creating, I thought about how we all start out as a "blank canvas".  We begin to add rich layers to our lives, with words, with music, with emotions.  Sometimes, there are things we can't say and feelings we can't express.  These words, feelings, emotions begin to tell our stories.  And sometimes, we cover up those layers, those feelings, those words, much like I covered up part of this canvas with paint.  We stay silent.  We have no words to express how we feel.  ...

Wonder Trees seem to be my thing. I’m always inspired and awed by them. They are always so resilient and ever changing at the same time. They never cease to amaze me. For this piece, I combined many layers of hand-painted papers, inks, and acrylic paint. I also painted “outside of my comfort zone”, using colors that I don’t normally use. Finally, I added modeling paste to add depth and more texture. " Today I Choose to Be a Light" This is the latest in my little series.  The title is, "Today I Choose to Be a Light".  I've been pondering the thought that every day we can choose our attitudes towards others and towards life in general.  This is the thought I chose for today.  I'm not perfect, but how can I be a light for others?  Can I extend a kind word, look at someone and smile, acknowledge someone and look them in the eye without just brushing past them?  Today I will make that effort and do my best. Strength of Trees “A tree with strong roots laughs at storms”.   – Malay Proverb The strength of trees.   Roots running deep into the dark soil.   Branches reaching upward into the light.   Ever changing, ever growing.   Leaves budding out into the warmth of spring.   Green and vibrant, fluttering in the soft summer breezes.   Bursting into vibrant hues of oranges and yellows, even as they are beginning their descent from the branches they’ve called home.   We can learn a lot from the strength of trees.   Our roots produce the branches, stretching out into the sun, craving the warmth and the light.    Those branches could almost represent the different paths of our life journey.   They hold all the beautiful leaves, the experiences and memories of our lives.   The leaves almost seems to remind us that our lives can withstand the winds of change, and although different, each is beautiful in its own season. ...

Joy in the Journey This is one of my newest mixed media pieces, fresh off the easel.   I've discovered that I just love painting these wild and crazy flowers.  These flowers start out as "blobs" of ink and I really have to use my imagination to make them come to life! This piece has many, many layers.  It has layers of paper and paint.  It also has some stenciling and layers of ink.  To finish it off, I added the words, "Discover the Joy in the Journey".  This painting truly was all about discovering the joy in the journey!   This painting is another one that will be up for auction toward the end of May. "Explore" This painting was inspired after a trip up to our family cabin.  We went with my daughter and little granddaughter.  During our time together, my granddaughter and I explored the woods, went up into the tree house, looked for fish in the creek, and took a whirl on the swings while we howled like wolves!  It was fun exploring life through her eyes and discovering new things.   Being up at the cabin was also a sober reminder of how short life is.  I was remembering everyone who loved the cabin so much and now they are no longer with us.  Still, you could feel their presence...in the soft, warm breeze that came in through the front door.  The beautiful, bright sunshine that cast shadows through the golden aspen leaves.  We will never forget the impact they had on our lives and the memories they left behind. And so, I wanted to make new memories with my sweet Adaleigh.  I want her to always remember this specia...

"Colorado Autumn Aspen" This was a commissioned mixed media piece that I recently completed.  My client lives in Arizona but grew up in Monte Vista, CO.  On the bottom portion of the piece, I added pieces of a 1964 Colorado Road Map.  I placed the town of Monte Vista in the upper center  portion  of the map .  This made it unique and very special to my client.  The trees were constructed of paper, paint, ink, and modeling paste. The leaves were done with hand-painted paper - each one torn individually from the paper.  I loved working on this piece and the client told me she will always treasure this piece.  There is nothing more rewarding! Dragonfly Dream I must be dreaming of spring...I seem to be gravitating to these softer, lighter colors and images.  This little dragonfly was created using paint, inks, painted paper, and stencils. You can see how it started out (below) and where it ended up.  It was a transformation, for sure. So here it goes, I'll open myself up and get honest and real.  I guess I'm also hoping for a transformation of sorts.  Longing to get out of the gloom and negativity that has plagued me for a few months now.  I want to see some light and also be some sort of light for others. I'm so tired of living in this dark place and I'm hoping, maybe through working on my artwork, the light will eventually come.
